College Scholarship : DOST-SEI Scholarship Program
DOST Scholarship Program |
The Department of Science and Technology awards an undergraduate scholarship program to deserving Filipino high school students annually. The scholarship program, one of the most generous in the country, is categorized into two, the R.A. 7687 scholarship and the DOST-SEI Merit scholarship. It makes college education more accessible to thousands of undergraduates and is geared to develop a scientifically and technologically literate citizenry. It can very well be the passport to your own undergraduate science degree, as it have been for me.
DOST Scholarship Categories
RA 7687 Science and Technology Scholarship is for applicant whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of all the identified indicators as approved by DOST-SEI Advisory Committee on S&T Scholarships. No fees are required for RA 7687 applicants.
The DOST-MERIT Scholarship is for applicant who belongs to a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of any of the identified indicators. The applicants must pay a non-refundable test fee of P200.
The DOST Scholarship Qualifying Examination
Unlike typical college entrance examinations, the DOST scholarship qualifying examination has a much wider coverage of topics and fields. Since the program wishes to develop a scientifically and technologically literate citizenry, then the test contents tend to lean heavily towards science related fields.
The qualifying examination is composed of two major parts, the Intellective and Non-Intellective portions. The Intellective half is designed to test your:
► scientific ability, which covers basic to intermediate high school biology, physics and chemistry;
► quantitative ability, which covers the entire high school curriculum up to intermediate trigonometry;
► mechanical and technical ability, which requires determining the correct outcome of a series of mechanical steps;
► linguistic ability, which requires a good grasp of high school English, and
► working memory, where images are briefly shown and requires identification of the images afterwards.
If you've studied enough and worked your way through a typical public high school curriculum, then the coverage of most of the tests in the DOST qualifying exam should have been taken up in the classroom. Much harder to anticipate is the non-intellective portion, which requires analysis to solve problems. In some cases, the test requires understanding of theoretical language, and comprehension of passages written in that language.
